Hatha Yoga focuses on connecting the mind, body and breath through a series of physical poses (Asanas). These poses help calm the mind, increase flexibility and develop strength. Each class includes Asana or posture sequences, Pranayama or breath work and end with Shavasana, a pose to encourage deep relaxation.
One of the benefits of practicing yoga regularly is the feeling that comes after releasing stored up energy from the body through Asana (posture) practice. The calmed body is then ready to enjoy Shavasana - the deep mindful relaxation at the end of each practice - and able to feel its full meditative effect.
"Hatha represents opposing energies: male and female, positive and negative. Hatha yoga attempts to balance mind and body via physical postures or ‘Asanas’, purification practices, controlled breathing, and the calming of the mind through relaxation and meditation. Asanas teach poise, balance and strength and are practised to improve the body's physical health and clear the mind in preparation for meditation in the pursuit of enlightenment."
